Advancing Nutrition in Spinal Cord Injury Care

We’re excited to share a significant milestone involving Dr. Samford Wong, Consultant Dietitian at the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, who has co-authored a newly accepted research protocol published in the journal Spinal Cord.
This collaborative achievement represents a proactive step toward improving nutrition standards in spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation.
Why Nutrition Matters in Spinal Cord Injury Recovery
Nutrition plays a crucial role in the health and recovery of people living with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D). It affects everything from wound healing and immunity to energy levels and long-term outcomes. Yet despite its importance, standardised nutrition datasets are still lacking in this field.
Recognising this gap, Dr. Wong and his fellow researchers developed a protocol aimed at identifying and defining essential nutrition variables to better support both clinical care and research.
About the Study
The protocol forms part of a project led by the Nutrition Special Interest Group (SIG) within the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS). Using the eDelphi methodology, the study engages experts across various disciplines to reach consensus on what nutrition outcomes and variables should be routinely measured for individuals with SCI/D.
The outcome will be the development of both a basic and extended nutrition dataset to inform future spinal cord injury rehabilitation and nutritional care guidelines.
Expert Involvement from the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital
Dr. Wong’s contribution reflects the high level of clinical expertise and research involvement at The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, known for its specialist care in spinal cord injury rehabilitation and complex neurological conditions.
