Ulcers

Stomach Pain

We provide expert diagnosis and treatment for ulcers, ensuring fast and effective relief for those experiencing pain, discomfort, or complications related to stomach and intestinal ulcers

What are Ulcers?

Ulcers are open sores that develop on the lining of the stomach, small intestine, or esophagus. They occur when the protective mucus layer is weakened, allowing stomach acid to damage the tissue.

Types of Ulcers:

  • Peptic Ulcers – Develop in the stomach or upper intestine (duodenum).
  • Gastric Ulcers – Form in the lining of the stomach.
  • Duodenal Ulcers – Occur in the first section of the small intestine.
  • Esophageal Ulcers – Found in the esophagus, often caused by acid reflux

Potential Causes

Ulcers can develop due to several factors, including:

  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) Infection – A common bacterial infection that weakens the stomach lining.
  • Long-Term NSAID Use – Pain relievers such as ibuprofen and aspirin can erode the stomach lining.
  • Excess Stomach Acid Production – Conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome increase acid production.
  • Chronic Stress & Smoking – Can weaken the stomach’s natural defenses.
  • Dietary Factors – While diet alone doesn’t cause ulcers, excessive alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeine can worsen symptoms.

Signs & Symptoms

Ulcers can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Burning Stomach Pain – Often felt between meals or at night.
  • Indigestion & Bloating – Discomfort after eating.
  • Nausea & Vomiting – Sometimes with blood (a sign of severe ulcers).
  • Unexplained Weight Loss – Loss of appetite due to ongoing pain.
  • Dark or Tarry Stools – A sign of bleeding in the digestive tract.

If left untreated, ulcers can lead to serious complications, including internal bleeding, perforation, or obstruction in the digestive system.

Diagnosis

At The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we offer fast and accurate ulcer diagnosis using:

  • Endoscopy (Gastroscopy) – A small camera inserted into the digestive tract to detect ulcers.
  • H. pylori Testing – Blood, stool, or breath tests to detect bacterial infection.
  • Barium X-Ray – Highlights ulcers in the stomach and intestines.
  • Stomach Acid Tests – Measures acid levels for conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Treatment Options

  • Antibiotics for H. pylori – If an infection is present, a two-week antibiotic course is prescribed.
  • Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) – Reduce stomach acid production to promote healing.
  • H2-Receptor Blockers – Decrease acid levels to prevent ulcer formation.
  • Lifestyle & Dietary Changes – Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, smoking, and spicy foods can reduce symptoms.
  • Surgical Treatment (Rare Cases) – Severe ulcers causing perforation or bleeding may require surgery.

Monitoring and Follow-Up Care

After treatment, regular monitoring is essential to prevent ulcers from returning. Our follow-up care includes:

  • Repeat Endoscopy – To confirm ulcer healing.
  • H. pylori Retesting – Ensuring complete eradication of bacteria.
  • Long-Term Acid Management – Medication adjustments to prevent recurrence.
  • Diet & Lifestyle Guidance – Helping patients maintain a healthy digestive system.

Arranging To Visit A Private GP
