Tonsillitis & Throat Infections

Suffering from severe throat pain

What is Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is the inflammation of the tonsils, often caused by viral or bacterial infections. It leads to sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and fever. While common in children, tonsillitis can affect people of all ages.

What are Throat Infections

Throat infections include a range of conditions affecting the pharynx, tonsils, or larynx, commonly caused by viruses, bacteria, or irritants. These infections can cause pain, inflammation, and difficulty swallowing.

Symptoms of Tonsillitis & Throat Infections

  • Severe sore throat
  • Swollen, red tonsils (sometimes with white spots)
  • Painful swallowing
  • Fever & chills
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck
  • Hoarseness or loss of voice
  • Bad breath
  • Ear pain & headaches

Potential Causes

  • Viral Infections – Common colds, flu, or Epstein-Barr virus (causing glandular fever).
  • Bacterial InfectionsStrep throat caused by Streptococcus bacteria is a major cause.
  • Allergies – Pollen, dust, or pet dander can irritate the throat.
  • Irritants – Smoking, pollution, or dry air can lead to throat infections.
  • Weakened Immune System – Increases susceptibility to infections.

Diagnosis

Our ENT specialists may perform:

  • Throat Examination – Checking for swollen or inflamed tonsils.
  • Throat Swab – To test for bacterial infections like strep throat.
  • Blood Tests – To rule out viral infections such as glandular fever.

Treatment Options

Home Remedies & Lifestyle Changes

  • Rest & Hydration – Drinking warm fluids like tea with honey.
  • Saltwater Gargles – Helps reduce inflammation.
  • Pain Relievers – Paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease throat pain.
  • Throat Lozenges & Sprays – Helps soothe irritation.

Medical Treatments

  • Antibiotics – Prescribed for bacterial infections such as strep throat.
  • Steroid Medication – In severe cases to reduce swelling.
  • Tonsillectomy – For chronic or recurrent tonsillitis, removal of tonsils may be necessary.

When to See a Doctor

Seek medical attention if:

  • Symptoms last more than 7-10 days
  • High fever & severe pain
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • White patches on the tonsils
  • Frequent, recurring throat infections
