Muscular Dystrophy

Understanding Muscular Dystrophy
Muscular Dystrophy (MD) refers to a group of inherited conditions that cause progressive muscle weakness and wasting. It affects muscle fibres, making it increasingly difficult to move, walk, or perform daily activities. MD can begin in childhood or adulthood, depending on the type, and may vary in severity and progression.
At the Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we provide expert care and rehabilitation for individuals living with muscular dystrophy. Our multidisciplinary approach supports both physical health and emotional well-being.
Common Types of Muscular Dystrophy
- Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD): Most common in children, particularly boys; symptoms usually appear before age five.
- Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD): Similar to DMD but progresses more slowly.
- Myotonic Dystrophy: Affects muscles and other systems; symptoms can appear at any age.
- Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD): Typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood, affecting facial and upper body muscles.
- Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophy: Affects shoulder and hip muscles, appearing in childhood or young adulthood.
- Congenital Muscular Dystrophy: Present at birth or within the first few months of life.
Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the type but often include:
- Progressive muscle weakness
- Difficulty walking, running, or climbing stairs
- Frequent falls
- Muscle stiffness or cramping
- Difficulty breathing (in advanced stages)
- Heart problems (in some forms of MD)
- Learning difficulties (in specific types)
Diagnosis
Diagnosing MD involves:
- Physical examination and symptom history
- Genetic testing to identify the specific type
- Blood tests (e.g., creatine kinase levels)
- Muscle biopsy
- Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies
- Cardiac and respiratory assessments (where needed)
