What is Laryngitis?
Laryngitis is the inflammation of the larynx (voice box), often causing hoarseness or loss of voice. It can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term), depending on the cause.
Symptoms of Laryngitis
- Hoarseness or weak voice
- Loss of voice or whispery speech
- Sore throat or tickling sensation
- Dry or irritated throat
- Coughing
- Mild fever (in some cases)
- Feeling the need to clear your throat
Common Causes
- Viral Infections – Most common cause, similar to a cold or flu.
- Bacterial Infections – Less common but may require antibiotics.
- Overuse of Voice – Speaking loudly, shouting, or singing excessively.
- Acid Reflux (GERD) – Stomach acid irritating the vocal cords.
- Smoking & Alcohol – Irritate and inflame the larynx.
- Exposure to Irritants – Dust, chemicals, or pollution.
- Allergies – Can cause throat inflammation.
Diagnosis
Our ENT specialists may conduct:
- Physical Examination – Checking for throat inflammation.
- Laryngoscopy – A small camera to examine the vocal cords.
- Voice Assessment – Evaluating voice quality and hoarseness duration.
- Swab or Lab Tests – If an infection is suspected.
Treatment Options

- Rest Your Voice – Avoid excessive talking or whispering.
- Hydration – Drink warm water, herbal teas, or honey-infused drinks.
- Steam Inhalation – Helps soothe the throat.
- Avoid Smoking & Alcohol – Reduce irritation.
- Manage Acid Reflux – Avoid spicy and acidic foods.
Medical Treatments
- Pain Relievers – Paracetamol or ibuprofen for discomfort.
- Antibiotics – If a bacterial infection is present.
- Corticosteroids – To reduce inflammation in severe cases.
- Speech Therapy – For persistent hoarseness or vocal strain.
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical attention if:
- Hoarseness lasts more than 2 weeks
- Severe throat pain or difficulty breathing
- Coughing up blood
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent lump or swelling in the throat
