Ear & Sinus Infections

Sinus Infection

Ear and sinus infections are common conditions that cause discomfort, pain, and congestion.

What is an Ear & Sinus Infection?

An ear infection occurs when bacteria or viruses cause inflammation in the middle ear, leading to fluid buildup and pressure.

A sinus infection (sinusitis) happens when the sinuses become inflamed or blocked, often due to an infection, allergies, or structural issues.

Common Symptoms

  • Ear pain or pressure
  • Blocked or muffled hearing
  • Nasal congestion & facial pressure
  • Headaches & dizziness
  • Fever & fatigue
  • Discharge from the ear or nose
  • Sore throat & postnasal drip

If symptoms persist for more than 10 days or worsen, medical attention is recommended.

Potential Causes of Ear & Sinus Infections

Ear Infection Causes

  • Bacterial or Viral Infections – Often linked to colds or flu
  • Allergies – Causing inflammation and fluid buildup
  • Eustachian Tube Dysfunction – Preventing proper drainage from the middle ear
  • Swimmer’s Ear (Otitis Externa) – Water exposure leading to bacterial growth
  • Enlarged Adenoids – Blocking the ear drainage pathway

Sinus Infection Causes

  • Colds & Respiratory Infections – Viral infections causing mucus buildup
  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever) – Triggering sinus inflammation
  • Nasal Polyps or Deviated Septum – Blocking proper sinus drainage
  • Bacterial Infections – Developing after viral sinusitis
  • Weakened Immune System – Increasing the risk of infections

Diagnosis of Ear & Sinus Infections

At Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, our ENT specialists perform:

  • Otoscopy & Ear Exam – To assess infection and fluid buildup
  • Nasal Endoscopy – To examine sinus passages for blockages
  • Hearing Tests (Audiometry) – If hearing loss is suspected
  • Sinus CT Scans – For chronic sinus issues or structural abnormalities
  • Lab Tests – To identify bacterial infections if needed

Treatment Options

At-Home Remedies & Symptom Relief

  • Pain Relievers (Paracetamol, Ibuprofen) – To reduce discomfort
  • Nasal Decongestants & Saline Sprays – To clear nasal passages
  • Steam Inhalation & Hydration – Helps loosen mucus
  • Rest & Fluids – Supports the body’s natural recovery

Medical Treatments

  • Antibiotics – If a bacterial infection is confirmed
  • Ear Drops – For outer ear infections (Swimmer’s Ear)
  • Steroid Nasal Sprays – To reduce sinus inflammation
  • Myringotomy (Ear Tubes) – For recurrent ear infections
  • Sinus Surgery (If Needed) – For chronic sinusitis or nasal blockages
