Bowel Obstruction
A bowel obstruction occurs when part of the small or large intestine becomes blocked, preventing normal movement of food, fluids, or gas through the digestive tract. This can cause significant discomfort and lead to serious complications if not addressed promptly.
At The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we offer fast access to private GP consultations, diagnostic imaging, and onsite endoscopy, helping patients receive rapid diagnosis and referrals when a bowel obstruction is suspected.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms may come on suddenly or develop gradually, and typically include:
- Severe or cramp-like abdominal pain
- Abdominal bloating or swelling
- Constipation or inability to pass gas
- Nausea and vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling full after small amounts of food
If the blockage is complete, it may become a medical emergency requiring immediate hospitalisation. However, partial obstructions or related conditions can sometimes be managed conservatively or monitored closely in a private setting.
Causes of Bowel Obstruction
Bowel obstructions can result from both mechanical and functional causes:
Mechanical causes:
- Adhesions (scar tissue from previous surgery)
- Hernias
- Colorectal cancer or tumours
- Diverticulitis or strictures
- Twisting of the bowel (volvulus)
- Impacted stool (especially in elderly patients)
Functional causes:
- Paralytic ileus (slow or stopped bowel movement due to illness, medication, or infection)
When to Seek Help
Seek medical attention urgently if you have:
- Severe or worsening abdominal pain
- Inability to pass stools or gas
- Persistent vomiting
- Signs of dehydration or confusion
- A known history of abdominal surgery and new symptoms
Early investigation is important to prevent complications such as bowel perforation or infection.
Diagnosis and Investigations
At Royal Bucks, your Private GP may recommend:
- Blood tests to assess inflammation or dehydration
- Abdominal X-ray or ultrasound (arranged via referral)
- CT scan for detailed imaging
- Endoscopy or colonoscopy if further investigation is needed
Our onsite endoscopy unit allows for same-site investigation of suspected large bowel obstruction causes such as cancer or strictures. A referral is required from a Consultant or Private GP, which can be arranged onsite.
