Bowel Cancer
Bowel cancer (also known as colorectal cancer) is one of the most common cancers in the UK. It develops from the inner lining of the colon or rectum and is often preceded by the growth of small benign polyps. Early detection through colonoscopy offers the best chance of successful treatment and recovery.
At The Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, we offer private access to endoscopic investigations for patients with symptoms that may suggest bowel cancer — including changes in bowel habit, bleeding, or unexplained anaemia.
Please note: All endoscopy procedures, including colonoscopy, require a referral from a Consultant or Private GP. You can obtain a referral by booking an appointment with one of our Consultant Endoscopists or Private GPs.
Signs and Symptoms of Bowel Cancer
Bowel cancer can develop without symptoms in its early stages, which is why regular screening and prompt investigation of warning signs is important. Key symptoms may include:
- A persistent change in bowel habits (e.g. diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating patterns)
- Bleeding from the back passage or blood in the stool
- Unexplained weight loss
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Fatigue related to iron-deficiency anaemia
- A feeling of incomplete emptying after a bowel movement
These symptoms can also be caused by other conditions such as haemorrhoids or IBS, but they should always be investigated if they persist.
When to Consider Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is the gold standard investigation for detecting bowel cancer or its early signs. It allows a Consultant Endoscopist to examine the entire colon using a flexible camera, take biopsies, and remove any suspicious polyps for testing.
Colonoscopy may be recommended if:
- You have persistent or unexplained GI symptoms
- Blood tests reveal iron-deficiency anaemia
- There is a family history of bowel cancer or polyps
- You have received a positive result from an NHS bowel screening test and want a private follow-up

The Importance of Early Diagnosis
Early-stage bowel cancer is often curable with surgery and may not require chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Left untreated, bowel cancer can spread to other parts of the body, making it harder to treat.
A timely colonoscopy can:
- Detect cancer at an early stage
- Identify and remove polyps before they turn cancerous
- Provide reassurance and a clear diagnosis
