Identifying Solutions
Many injuries and lost functions can be overcome with rehabilitation. Spinal damage, stroke, or neurological conditions may still mean that walking, or standing naturally are not possible.
Our role is to find the best way to return that ability with the assistance of technology. For a specific task, or wider life.
Being able to make eye to eye contact is a pleasure, or restarting an activity. The opportunity to return to work may be important to you, or maintaining your independence.
A detailed assessment of your position and potential for moving forward is normally carried out. A written report can be provided, along with recommendations and direct support.
Our professional team can assist with learning to use equipment in the best way. Occupational therapists are available to help you fit this into the reality of life.
Assistive Technology
Recent developments have brought a wide range of devices for assistive standing, which make so many activities possible.
We have seen a surgeon who came to us for rehabilitation return to work, in an adjustable, standing wheelchair. A number of patients have found life enjoyable again, through a range of equipment:
- Adjustable, electrical tilt tables.
- Powered, upright exercise machines.
- A variety of standing wheelchairs.
Each help people to achieve verticalisation and a more comfortable posture for the activity they wish to pursue. Pressure issues are relieved, reach is improved.
Equipment for supportive standing has become part of society, used to present, or teach, or by many other professions.
Independence matters
An Educational Approach
NASA use tilt tables to train and test their atronauts. A good way to get used to different perspectives and to learn to cope with varied spatial orientation, or balance requirements.
In a similar way, people coming to the Royal Bucks with little standing ability often begin reorientation on tilt tables.
They can be gradually adjusted and lead to time on other forms of motorised support frame. Greater levels of exercise often become possible, or the ability to pursue chosen tasks.
Even with significant, or complete weakness in lower limbs, solutions are normally found. Along with practical effect, safety and ease of use are always priorities.
They are backed up by our team working closely with those using the equipment. To provide understanding, training and the confidence to benefit from a new approach.
Personal Support
Recent research has shown that assisted standing has benefits beyond being upright, as valuable as this is. Wider physical and psychological improvement tend to follow.
Our staff appreciate this and will work closely with you to find personal solutions. Whether you come to us an inpatient, outpatient, or attend an advice clinic.
Achieving the mobility to carry out daily activities and have maximum independence are the core aims, along with your individual wishes to return to the life you chose.
Finer points you require support with are never seen as minor. From pressure issues, to needing unique adjustments on equipment, or carrying out an unusual task.
Assisted standing is more than a medical term, when this holds the ability to give so much pleasure and to rebuild lives.
