History & Modernity
Our hospital has a proud history, first established by Florence Nightingale in 1832. With a royal charter granted decades later, it has been a place of dedicated medical care ever since.
In 1997, we began our journey as a specialist spinal rehabilitation centre, a vision expanded by the Affinity Group in 2013 and now carried forward by Akessa Healthcare. Today, ongoing investment has transformed our facilities, combining historic charm with state-of-the-art medical advancements.
The Royal Bucks is more than just a hospital, it’s a warm, welcoming space designed to support your recovery. Our rehabilitation centre is equipped with the latest technology, but just as importantly, it’s powered by an exceptional team of professionals. Their expertise, compassion, and dedication to patient care ensure you receive the best possible support on your journey to recovery.
The caring spirit that began here nearly two centuries ago remains at the heart of everything we do.
Who We Support
We welcome patients of all ages, starting from 18 years old. Whether inpatient or outpatient, each person receives equal care and attention, and we treat a wide range of conditions with compassion and expertise.
While we are well-known for our specialised recovery programmes for spinal cord injury and brain injuries, we also provide care for patients recovering from strokes, amputations, and neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s, MS, or muscular dystrophy.
For those with complex medical needs, we offer comprehensive support, including specialised nursing care, bowel and bladder management, skin care, and nutritional support.
If ventilation or other medical assistance is required, we ensure it is available, alongside any additional personal care that may be needed.
At the heart of our work is a shared focus: helping every individual move forward and live the best life possible. We believe that each person’s path to recovery is unique, and we’re here to support them in defining and achieving their own version of progress.

A positive, friendly ethos helps

The Best Outcome
It’s natural to hope for a return to life as it was before an event that caused disruption, and we share that goal with our patients. However, we believe in being transparent about the journey ahead.
You can read some of our rehabilitation case studies, each showcasing remarkable recoveries, though not always returning to life exactly as it was before.
One patient, for example, remains in a wheelchair but has returned to work as a consultant surgeon. Others have regained mobility after severe incapacity and are now focused on continuing their progress.
We also feature images of a patient running in our grounds, someone who arrived unable to walk or support themselves, now making strides toward recovery. Many others have rebuilt their lives in unique and inspiring ways.
Achieving the ability to once again do the things that make us feel independent can be as rewarding as any accomplishment, and we’re here to support each patient in reaching their personal version of recovery.
Sound Management
Every member of our team plays a vital role in a patient’s recovery, whether it’s through a friendly conversation or a carefully tailored treatment plan. Our physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and nurses are all essential to the rehabilitation process.
They can only offer the support they’re committed to providing if our center is managed effectively across all aspects of healthcare and daily life.
Our Medical Director, a leading maxillofacial surgeon, and our CEO, one of the UK’s most experienced medical executives, work closely with an in-house Chief Medical Officer, IT Director, and Director of Governance. Together, they ensure seamless operations.
In addition, other members of our team manage financial needs, oversee nursing, surgical theatres, and maintain strong NHS engagement. Above all, our management team empowers every staff member to reach their full potential, fostering an environment where excellence thrives.
By keeping management in-house and maintaining high standards, we create a strong foundation that aligns with the values of the medical group we’re part of—ensuring our patients receive the best possible care.
