Professor Riaz graduated from Imperial College London with a degree in chemical pathology in 1991. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from the University of London in 1994.
He pursued surgical training in London, successfully completing his FRCS examinations, and gained further experience spending 15 months in Melbourne, Australia.
Professor Riaz expanded his expertise through a research-based PhD at the University of Lund in Sweden, which led to his recognition with a Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
In 2008, he was added to the GMC’s Specialist Register in General Surgery. His subsequent consultancy roles established his reputation for excellence in surgical practice, with a patient-centered approach at the core of his work.
His special interests include upper GI surgery, GORD, achalasia, gallbladder disease, and hernia surgery. With advanced skills in laparoscopic and keyhole surgery, he prioritises minimally invasive techniques for the benefit of his patients.
Beyond his technical expertise, Professor Riaz is deeply committed to his patients’ well-being, striving to help them regain health and improve their quality of life.
Research & Teaching
Professor Riaz has held board positions in several medical associations, including the British Association of Day Surgery. He also serves as a NICE advisor on endoscopic procedures and an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons.
An active surgical researcher, he has contributed to numerous research projects of international significance. His work includes over 60 published papers, alongside lectures and seminars delivered to medical professionals worldwide.
Committed to integrating healthcare into community settings, Professor Riaz is the founder and Chair of the Health Medical and Education Centre at the Central Mosque of Brent, promoting accessible medical care and education.
