Professor Arden qualified in medicine from the University of London, in 1986. He then completed four years research into the genetics of osteoporosis and gained an MSc and MD in Epidemiology.
Sharing his knowledge and increasing the breadth of this is important to Professor Arden. He spent six months as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Epidemiology at the University of San Francisco in 1998, prior to being admitted to the GMC’s specialist register.
Consultancy posts which followed included clinical and academic aspects. He served as a consultant rheumatologist at Southampton General Hospital and Professor in Rheumatic Diseases at the University of Southampton.
Professor Arden then became a Professor of Rheumatic Diseases and Director of Musculoskeletal Epidemiology at the University of Oxford. At the same time, serving as Honorary Consultant in Rheumatology at the Oxford Orthopaedic Centre.
The blend of knowledge gained from leading positions allows Professor Arden to offer his patients fine treatment. For osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis, soft tissue rheumatism, fibromyalgia, or wider rheumatic diseases.
He is appreciative of the distress musculoskeletal conditions, or pain can cause. Showing his patients an exceptional level of care, whilst working towards recovery.
Research & Teaching
Professor Arden’s core research interests focus on the epidemiology of osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. He has led a major programme investigating those conditions.
Alongside his work with patients at our hospitals, he is based in the Botnar Research Centre, University of Oxford, with additional sessions at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, at the University of Southampton.
Professional Bodies
Professor Arden has served on the governing body at Lady Margaret Hall and as Deputy Director at the Centre for Sports, Exercise & Osteoarthritis Research Versus Arthritis.
He was on the Scientific Advisory Board for Arthritis Research UK’s Pain Centre and Scientific Ambassador for the International Osteoporosis Society. Professor Arden has been part of the EULAR and OARSI working groups, producing new definitions and treatment guidelines.
